Hard to believe these Internet days but that's what you'd see from the window of a train coming to Rye, just under two hours away from London.

I worked on this print on the slow train to London, starting with a life sketch of the scenery outside the train window and then working directly on a tiny offcut of a mezzotint plate.

Rye lies southeast of London, with the fields of Romney Marsh being the first landscape you'd see on the way up to the capital. This scenery is very Rye which is the highest point in the otherwise flat landscape created by the receded sea. They say Romney Marsh is perfect grazing land for the sheep and the local lamb is sought after by the French chefs across the channel.
