Cocker Spaniel Dog drawing from life. Pencil on paper original fine art

This is the original dog pencil drawing, not a reproduction. Signed and with an additional inscription from the artist. Pencil on archival paper. Paper size 30×21 cm.

Hugo is a working cocker spaniel. I made this quick pencil drawing from life in preparation for a large portrait painting of Hugo with his owner Peter. On the first visit, I came with a bribe of yummy treats and here on the drawing, he is looking up expectantly while I am trying to capture him.

The cutest of breeds, the French bulldog, was not as ubiquitous back then as it has become in a few recent years and was sure to catch one’s eye.
We had a lovely hot Summer in the South East of England in 2003. That year I often sketched from the window of our art gallery, trying to capture the diversity of Rye’s High Street visitors. One of such quick line drawings depicted a boy with a dog walking along. I felt the image deserved its life to be extended and made into this original drypoint print.
