Georges De La Tour

Georges de la Tour exhibition at Jacquemart André Museum in Paris
After visiting the exhibition of works by Georges De La Tour

A relatively small collection of works by Georges de la Tour, complemented by paintings of other contemporary artists working in the same style, by works of artists replicating his style, and the works that came from the atelier of the artist.

The setting is a charming museum Musée Jacquemart André. Reminded me of the Wallace Collection housed in a comparable city palace in London.

I am blown away by the quiet power of this master of painting. The precision and subtlety with which he depicts the feelings of his characters is magical. The way he simplifies the forms yet anchored these down with minute details creates a divine marriage between the monumental and the intimate. Large areas of nearly flat colour are precisely rendered on the borders creating the space. We enter this space following the plan that the artist laid out through the macro elements of composition and micro elements of detailing.
